Gait Analysis Feedback

Today I received some Gait Analysis feedback written by a client after a session we did this morning that I thought I would share...

"I always thought I was too much of a "back of the pack" runner to benefit from one to one gait analysis. Surely that was only for faster people, not for anybody, not for me.

Nevertheless, I asked John about it out of curiosity as I had seen it is a service he offers. He explained that it was for anybody; he videoed you running and then suggested ways to improve. He wasn't interested in making major changes, but could tweak things to improve efficiency. I decided it would be interesting to give it a go.

Now I hate being photographed when I run so being videoed was my idea of a nightmare, but we went to a quiet area and John made me feel quite comfortable and not a bit self conscious (which is what I was worried about).

The videos said it all, there was a lot of room for improvement. It almost made me annoyed that I had been ignoring my technique for so many years. Surely I would be in a much better place if I had done this within the first year or so of running. Anyway, you can only focus on the positives and the positives are that I was doing something about it now.

In short, John identified that I had a weak core and little to no knee lift causing a mid to heel foot strike. This was all causing tight hamstrings and quads which had been apparent during massage sessions.

After a couple of days, John sent a detailed analysis of the videos and included core strengthening exercises and drills that would help to improve my overall gait. He also offered to run with me to allow him the time to see how I was on a longer run and to provide advice and tips along the way. This was invaluable; I felt like I was lifting my knees higher for example but unless someone actually watches you it is hard to know if you are doing it enough.

It is still early days but I have no doubt this is going to help me improve a lot this year, and my goals are now looking a little more achievable with time and hard work. Yes it is going to take a lot of effort but it is just the kick-start to the year that I needed."
